To reimagine an existing heritage healthcare facility in the City of Markham, we looked to develop a strong sense of place and create a village, with several different uses working together. Backing against a ravine and watercourse, the site boundary is wrapped in a tree canopy, with the main access on the east side at Bayview Avenue in the City of Markham.
The program created a new healthcare facility with an associated hotel and seniors care component, in addition to a residential enclave to the west. The centralized park space offers views of the landscape from each side of the residential buildings, reinforcing the connection with nature. An internal urban plaza provides a focal point for the healthcare activity, providing direct access to grade-related pharmacies, coffee shops, and other light commercial uses.
Close to the 404 and 407 Highways, the healthcare campus would be accessible to both the local community and farther afield. The healthcare facilities would provide over 100,000 m2 of space, just under an additional 100,000 m2 of residential uses, with 1.75 hectares of park and amenity. Weston Consulting provided a full site assessment, planning policy review, and design feasibility study services for the land owner. No development applications were made following the completion of this process.
